*** At the very very bottom I post a basic summary of the rules.
**** Nintendo has nothing to do with this. This is all fan made and managed.
General and Technical Information (The first few are the most important)
So what is this?
This is the third and final Super Mario 64 Video Quiz. It is made up of a series of tasks, "usually" 10 for each level, that are designed to test the skills of competitors. These tasks are separated into two groups; Timed and Non-Timed. Timed tasks are more based on route planning and speed (more about the scoring of these later in the FAQ), whereas Non-Timed tasks are more about skill and thought. In timed tasks, the person with the fastest route gets the most points. In a non-timed task, everyone who completed the task correctly gets the points. When you do any given task, you are able to get points. The person with the most points, by the end of the final level, wins. And yes, there will be prizes.
How much time do I have to complete a task?
There is a deadline of seven days to complete a task. No exceptions unless you are a regular competitor with over 3000 points total and an emergency came up. You won't get an extension just because you are a regular, you need proof of said emergency. No extensions on timed tasks though.
The task deadline is example - "January 1st." What time does it usually end on that day?
For the sake of consistency, before 8:00 AM EST on that date, which is usually a Saturday. Sometimes I am late in posting the new task and might have a few extra hours to submit your entry, which is done here on the actual website. I say 8:00 AM could be how early I change it, but it could be the very end of the day as well, so aim for morning just in case!!!!
Why are the results posted a week later after submissions are closed?
So I can look them over during the coarse of the week. Then they are posted when the next task is posted.
How many tasks will there be?
There is expected to be either 1, 4, 10, 15, or 20 tasks for any level. For instance, a mini-level like the Tower of the Wing Cap may only have 1 or 2 tasks while a huge level like Wet-Dry World could have 20 tasks. It all depends on how many task ideas I have per level. As introduced in the last topic, there is a new "revisiting" thing that will happen much later in the quiz. After every level has its 5, 10, or 15 initial tasks, we will revisit them with an extra set of 3 or 5. In the case of Bowser levels, there will be three beforehand and four afterwards. Bottom line, just stay tuned per world. Basically it will just depend on how many good tasks we can create/people submit to us. It can be completely random.
Before the April 19th Update it was as follows
------------------------------
So how ARE Timed tasks scored? Normally it is as follows
1st place gets 100% of the points
2nd place gets 80%
3rd gets 60%
everyone else 40%
So how ARE Timed tasks scored on tasks 8 and above in a world?
1st place gets 100% of the points
2nd place gets 90%
3rd gets 80%
4th gets 70%
5th gets 60%
everyone else 40%
------------------------------
So how ARE Timed tasks scored now?
All timed tasks will be from 500 - 1000 points.
If a task is worth 500 or 600 there will be a top 3, 700 or 800 a top 4, 900 or 1000 a top 5. It will look like the following...
500 - 1st [500] 2nd [400] 3rd [300] Everyone else [200]
600 - 1st [600] 2nd [480] 3rd [360] Everyone else [240]
700 - 1st [700] 2nd [595] 3rd [490] 4th [385] Everyone else [280]
800 - 1st [800] 2nd [680] 3rd [560] 4th [440] Everyone else [320]
900 - 1st [900] 2nd [810] 3rd [720] 4th [630] 5th [540] Everyone else [360]
1000 - 1st [1000] 2nd [900] 3rd [800] 4th [700] 5th [600] Everyone else [400]
This was done to make it more balanced and fair to those who put a lot of time and effort in being the best in a very competitive aspect of the quiz.
SPECIAL TASKS can go as high as 1,500 points, but no lower than 800.
800 - 1st [800] 2nd [680] 3rd [560] 4th [440] Everyone else [320]
900 - 1st [900] 2nd [810] 3rd [720] 4th [630] 5th [540] Everyone else [360]
1000 - 1st [1000] 2nd [900] 3rd [800] 4th [700] 5th [600] Everyone else [400]
1100 - 1st [1100] 2nd [980] 3rd [860] 4th [740] 5th [620] Everyone else [420]
1200 - 1st [1200] 2nd [1040] 3rd [990] 4th [870] 5th [740] Everyone else [440]
1300 - 1st [1300] 2nd [1150] 3rd [1040] 4th [990] 5th [870] 6th [740] Everyone else [460]
1400 - 1st [1400] 2nd [1200] 3rd [1100] 4th [1000] 5th [900] 6th [800] Everyone else [480]
1500 - 1st [1500] 2nd [1300] 3rd [1200] 4th [1100] 5th [1000] 6th [900] 7th [800] Everyone else [500]
So how are made up or missed tasks scored?
You generally will receive get 75% of the lowest available.
What are Battle Stars vs Points (Coins)?
On each completed task you earn points or "Coins" and you also earn one Battle Star. A Battle Star is a different type of point that is used to challenge other players in user generated and agreed upon tasks. By the time the quiz is over, we will have winners for both the people with the most Coins as well as the people with the most Battle Stars. This way we can truly see who are the most dedicated and best competitors in both fields.
Do you mind if I use a camera to record my entry?
Go ahead! You may use a camera if that's all you have. Try not to use a terrible quality webcam, though; sometimes that can impact timing and I may time your entry incorrectly. If you try to fill the entire video with the TV picture, it will look a lot more professional.
Can I use the Virtual Console version of Mario 64?
Absolutely! There's no difference between the VC and original version, so you can do this. - Do NOT spread your standard def footage to make it look HD. This ruins the quality of what I must judge and will NOT be accepted on anything other then the practice task. You can add side bars to your video if you like to make it look more professional.
I can also record with a GameBridge or a Dazzle, right?
Yes. If you have some sort of recording software, then please use it. It's much more professional looking and makes it very easy to time. If you don't mind, I would also like for you to tell me if you are using a console when submitting your first task. Although it's usually easy to tell, sometimes it is not and I'll need clarification.
I live in Europe and I play on the console with the PAL version of the game. Can I join?
Absolutely! You've probably noticed that the PAL version runs slower than the NTSC (American and Japanese) version. This is fine, however; for timed tasks, multiplying the time by (5/6) will match the speed exactly. Some people have suggested giving penalties to people who use PAL for it makes the game easier. I have thought about it, but will not act upon it yet. Just tell me if you do decide to use the PAL version.
I'm allowed to use emulators, correct?
Once again, yes. However, you must use Project64 or 1964 to record your entries; other emulators have functions like slowdown that are considered cheating. When recording your entries, you should use a screen recorder that can record the filebar of Project64 and 1964, like CamStudio or Camtasia. If you have to use Fraps, however, you may. There is one restriction, though; if you use Fraps, you MUST use the Timer Gameshark Code to show that you are not cheating. I repeat, you MUST use the Timer Code.
If on a mac you can use SixtyForce.
If on Linux you can install PJ64 1.6 and run it through Wine .
ALSO - Project64 version 2.0 is BANNED! I repeat is BANNED!
I have a screen recorder, but I prefer Fraps. Can I use Fraps?
Basically it's this. Fraps = MUST use timer code, everything else I need to see your filebar!
You have asked me to prove that my video isn't fake. Not only am I offended, how do I do that?
First of all, if I ask you to do this, don't feel offended. Feel honored that you are good enough to make somebody else think you used tools. The answer to how is sometimes to upload the raw video, with filebar and all, or sometimes it is unprovable. If it is unprovable, then I will count your entry but will ask you to either record the screen with a camera or to use CamStudio or Camtasia next task.
What is the timer code?
It's a code created by Yoshielectron that makes a timer show up in the game. The reason it shows you are not cheating is it is not easy to make it show up in an emulator that you can cheat with. Unfortunately the code is too long to include in this topic, so you must use Google to find it. Sorry.
Can I use another gameshark code?
Unless it is a “Mario Color Code,” or the "120 stars/100 lives" code, bgm loudness, or the negative lives codes, you may not use any other Gameshark code. Using any codes that are not the timer code or a color code are banned, and you may be completely disqualified if you use them.
How do you time tasks?
I begin timing the first frame that you can see the level begin. That way the timer codes match your finish time.
What counts as a "death" in terms of timing for a task?
The first frame of Bowser's face animation.
What counts as a "star collect" in terms of timing for a task?
The first frame of the star no longer being visible.
Why don't YOU submit any tasks?
Too busy running TehMonitor.com is why! Watching and timing your videos is also enough for me :)
When I upload my task to Youtube/Dailymotion/Blip.tv/Whatever, how should I name it?
Try to follow the scheme of “Super Mario 64 Video Quiz 3 – Level [x], Task [x]” This keeps the entries looking good and neat. In the description of the Video, put the exact task and this website url and whatever else you would like in addition.
Okay, so I've recorded and uploaded my task... now what?
Submit an unlisted video in the submission box here on the website!
Oh, and don't forget to actually submit it officially here on the website or it doesn't count.
May I submit more than once to a task?
No, but this rule can change later on per task so please make sure to read each task clearly to see if this changes.
I accidentally didn't follow the rules, and you didn't catch it right away! I wish I could have known.
Sorry! I don't have time to watch every submission when you post them, and a lot of the time, I don't watch a whole bunch until I time them. If your task was incorrect, I'm sorry, but that's your fault. Again, I emphasize asking questions and READING THE TASK COMPLETELY.
I'm a cheater and I cheat and you've caught me cheating. Can I come back?
No. No exceptions.
Can I submit in every task you've had so far?
There will be opportunities to submit them at certain times of the year where you can submit old tasks. Points will be lower. Those who are participating in real time will have the higher scores, always.
The Gameplay Itself
Can I start recording from a savestate?
Only if you begin recording from the Star Select screen or before you enter the level! If you begin the recording inside of the level, I will not count your entry - no exceptions!
I really want to show something else in my video. Can I do that?
Sure, but it's usually unwise in a Timed task. For Non-Timed tasks, you can, but make sure you don't break any rules!
May I add commentary/music over the video?
YES! Please, if you have the ability, add some commentary or something. It can get tedious listening to the same thing for 15 tasks in a row, and it makes the video more interesting if you do this. If I ask for you not to do this, however, please don't. There's often a reason if I say this. Also, no additional music. I prefer to be able to hear Mario's actions.
I like the way Mario looks with no cap/little health. Can I enter that way?
Unless if I specify not to, sure. A lot of the time, things like that can really help you.
I already did this task in another video I made a long time ago! Can I use that for my entry?
Nope – everything you use in an entry must be a new work. Anything old that is being reuploaded or disguised as new is not allowed.
Ooh, I'm gonna look at the person who has the best time so far and steal his route!
No, don't do that! Half the fun of the Quiz is to think of your own strategies and plan them! If you let someone else do all the work for you, you're not going to like this Quiz. There's really no way for me to inforce this rule, however I reserve the right to accuse you of cheating at any time. If you're offended by this and you didn't cheat, don't be. Think of it as a compliment that I called you so good that I thought that you were cheating.
How can I get a good route?
By looking at everything in the level – the trees, poles, enemies, and especially walls. Using glitches is not only allowed, but encouraged! Anything that you can do to get a good route, think of and do. If you find a loophole in my wording, then that is fine, but occasionally I will disallow anybody else from using that loophole. Your task will still be counted for points however.
Any way to earn Bonus Points aside being the best at timed tasks?
You will receive 350 bonus points for every 10 tasks you complete!

Can you erase me from the database?
The answer is no. If you compete in the Quiz, you're there forever. You can delete your videos of coarse and just fade away like you were never here.
My question wasn't answered here! What do I do?
Ask them in the topic! I will never ignore stupid questions – ask them, and I will surely put them in the next Quiz topic. Asking them privately is okay too, but I'd prefer if you were to ask in the topic. It helps others who may have the same question.
You're a terrible speller/writer, and I've noticed a mistake. Can I tell you?
Sure, but don't be rude about it. If you are, I'll melt your face with a fire flower.
I have an idea for a good task/rule! Can I tell you?
Sure! This Quiz will change a lot over the however long it will last, and I will always be ready for improvements. Sadly, I may not listen to every idea I get but it can't hurt to submit one!
Can I tell everybody I've ever met in my entire life about this quiz?
Of course! More competitors means more tasks, and more tasks means more fun!
Anything else?
That's about it. Have fun!
Basic Summary
- New Tasks every Saturday.
- You have one week to submit your entry. No exceptions.
- Every task you earns you 1 Battle Star.
- If you upload your video to a place with a video description available, you must copy and paste the task objective and this website in the video description space. That was this site gets shared and credited.
- If you cheat you're banned forever.
- If you started late and want to submit old tasks to catch up in points (coins), and there will be opportunities available at certain times so just keep watch for when these may be. Stock piling on said tasks might be a good idea, but just don't upload them until said date(s), but I didn't tell ya that.
- Bonus points will be granted for every 10 tasks you complete.
- There will be prizes available.
- You must be 13 years or older to accept the prizes and need parental permission unless you are 18 years of age or older.
- Do NOT spread your standard def footage to make it look HD. This ruins the quality of what I must judge and will NOT be accepted on anything other then the practice task. You can add side bars to your video if you like to make it look more professional.
Final Note: Tasks are subject to change within 24 hours of being posted online. Also, loopholes are accepted and may be used, but all tasks must be 100% completed within their respective worlds. Example, a task created in JRB MUST be fully done inside of the level without leaving it. You can do things prior to the task though such as lose health, go capless, etc. The task begins once you physically have entered the level after the select screens. Exceptions will apply on a task per task basis. If something is unclear or does not appear to be properly defined, please contact us immediately.
PS - Grand Stars were removed April 19th, 2014 as part of a restructuring of the quiz.
The End.

The End.
